Lavrov: EU must connect to guarantee uninterrupted supply of gas to Europe via Ukraine

EU should join the process to guarantee an uninterrupted supply of Russian energy to Europe through transit countries, said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

I hope that we all take a lesson from the difficulties encountered in the past year (the gas crisis - ed.), and earlier this year and will take all measures so that they do not recur. On the part of our Ukrainian partners such assurances ring, but we would consider it important that the EU is connected to guarantee the security of supply, - he said on Monday at a press conference in Brussels.

The minister said that Russia is concerned, we guarantee that all of its contractual obligations to supply gas to Europe on all fronts, we will assume, as did all previous years.

The problems that arose with the transit, they need to deal with the transit countries. We are ready to help find such solutions, - Lavrov said.

He noted that gas, which is contracted by European and all other consumers, will be pumped in full. The main thing that he passed through the territory of transit countries, - said the head of Russia's Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov added that in the beginning of the year Russia and the EU became an interesting experience with the finding of European observers on the Russo-Ukrainian border, as well as on the border of Ukraine and countries of Eastern Europe. This is also one of the ways that will, in conjunction with other measures to ensure security of supply, - he said, recalling that Russia also supported the establishment of early warning systems and early warning with the transit countries.

Meanwhile, EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner said that the agreement to establish an early warning mechanism in the energy sector, is expected to be signed during the upcoming November in Stockholm on Russia-EU summit.

We expect the signing of several agreements. In particular, the most important is the (agreement) on early warning mechanisms for energy, - she said Monday at a news conference in Brussels after a session of Russia Permanent Partnership Council - the EU.

According to Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the early warning mechanism in the energy sector will consist of three phases: notification, consultation and implementation.

We see real opportunities for the signing of the agreement, - underlined Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
